Sheila Water's italic classes were everything, and more, of what I expected
from this talented lady.   Not only did we get to see her slide show of wonderful pieces that she has done, but she shared some of her experiences with us.

She changed my approach to doing calligraphy. I hadn't been using a slant board and she assured us that this was the way to practice. I had not been using a dip pen as much as I did for these classes. She made me want to be a better scribe.

When thinking of the lettering styles that I know and love...Italic  does not come to mind.  Do I use it? yes.  Do I love my own? no!  After three days with Sheila Waters I have a better understanding of why that is. Taking class notes on the letters, attempting to emulate the beautiful shapes appearing on the wall and listening to the details of history behind these Italic letters was a treat. Sheila Waters is a fount of information regarding the study of antique manuscripts. This knowledge is equaled by her desire to teach the proper letterforms.

Some of what we learned was the difference between analytical and rhythmical practice, when and how to use each, rhythm, speed, pen angles, pen angles and pen angles! No wonder she wrote an excellent book on it all, there is so much to apply. Precision is a mastery, not quickly obtained, but it is worth the effort and time involved. One comment she made is worth repeating," Rome wasn't built in a day and neither was a good Italic!" With a better trained critical eye, pen manipulation, improved practice habits and a strong desire to improve, there is hope for my Italic after all.
