April 10-11, 2010

A group of nineteen calligraphers of varying skills came together for a workshop with Jane Shibata.  We started by learning the historic version of Uncial.  That was good because a few in our group were brand new to this hand many hadn't done it for a while.  We all learned the subtle nuances of the correct way to make each letter.  We also learned why some of our letters weren't correct and more importantly, why we might be making those mistakes.  Sometimes it was the unknowing influence of doing Italic that was affecting particular letters.

We were each gifted with a piece of Jane's writing of our name.  She was also generous in her sharing of the portfolios of personal work, bookmark exemplars and decorating envelope ideas.  It is nice to see her joy in doing calligraphy and to feel her love of teaching.

Jane taught more than just 'here's how to write the letter'.  Her thoughtful explanations gave strength to the construction of each letter.  A quick review on Sunday helped solidify that.  The handouts showed many ways that various calligraphers had put the 'icious' into their Uncial.  It's now up to us to get our letters beautiful
