IMG_0580The workshop “An Abundance of Books” was held in Poway the weekend of October 15/16, 2011—and  it was wonderful!

Diane Reiter, in addition to being an experienced and creative calligrapher and bookbinder, is an inspiring and enthusiastic teacher. She provided a short list of tools to bring and had backups available as well as some more specialized tools. She gave us clear and complete handouts with each project. She had multiple samples to show us, and a selection of recommended how-to books. She gave step-by-step, careful demonstrations. She answered questions readily, and she showed a wry and gentle sense of humor with those of us who struggled. She had obviously done very thorough preparation. All materials were provided, from papers to board to ribbons.

Our class of 12 (+ or -) created eight books that ranged from a post-it-note cover/container to more elaborate sewn structures. Diane gave us terminology and taught us some basic techniques that we used in several projects. She always had extra materials in case there was an “unrecoverable” (pun intended) error. Some of us discovered we liked cutting and pasting better than stitching! The materials she provided were beautiful, and we could choose from among a lovely selection, so everyone could personalize their creations.

The eight projects were: an envelope book, the post-it holder (everyone’s favorite for gifts, perhaps!), a drum leaf book (gorgeous), a pamphlet, a two-needle bound book (a challenge), a Coptic stitched book (traditional elegance), a strap journal (funky-cool), and a ribbon book (fancy!) There was definitely something for everyone.

The Community Room at Creekside Plaza was large and comfortable, with several places to eat available in the adjoining strip mall. Kati Searci did a great job getting everything coordinated and organized. The group was friendly and supportive and some of the more experienced participants shared some books they had created.

Diane left us wanting more!
