About First Night Escondido: Risa Gettler writes:
First Night Escondido is an annual alcohol-and drug-free New Year's Eve Celebration with live music, dancing, the best of restaurant and vendor foods, hands-on art activities, a Chinese Dragon parade, a dazzling fireworks display at midnight and more at California Center for the Arts.
This was my third year volunteering my calligraphic skills at First Night Escondido. SDFC members Edna Wright, Viriginia Bendik and myself have been volunteering in the last years. Edna has volunteered for the past four and Virginia Bendik for the past two years. We’ve become quite a team! Edna demonstrated her bookbinding skills whilst Virginia and I calligraphed SDFC bookmarks. Each year the attendance increases, and this year it was bigger and busier than ever. The arts room, which hosts several arts of different media, was non-stop activity all evening. From 6:00 to 11:30 PM there was a sea of people wanting their names written on SDFC bookmarks. I varied writing styles throughout the night utilizing Uncial, Textura, Italic. Virginia wrote in romantic Copperplate. It was a great evening. I hope you’ll come by and see us First Night 2010!
