An aside about IAMPETH for those of you who might be interesting in learning more about the group., They are having a convention in Nashville, July 13-19, 2009, that is very worthwhile for those of you who want to meet some amazing people and improve your lettering skills. I found that the group is made of working artists, vs our calligraphy group that has many who do it for the pleasure of it, not always for income.
I had joined IAMPETH last August, 2008, when I found out about the group coming to Palm Springs, and even though I didn’t get to take classes, I was able to attend Saturday and meet some of the members. I was expecting to meet a high society group that would request samples of my penmenship before I could enter, but instead I was introduced to the warmest and friendliest group of people I have ever met.
As I sat in on the business class and listened to everyone share their marketing techniques and strategies without feeling competitive, I knew this was a different group of people. They kept mentioning this man named Joe at the Saturday banquet and how many untold hours he spent created the website that has hundreds of historical original art pieces from the many different lettering artists over the last 100 years. It was a joy to spend a few hours with someone so passionate about lettering, and let some of that expertise rub off on us.
