We Have the Spirit!

In three very full evenings in August, 2008, Douglas Boyd prepared us for Claude Mediavills's workshops by looking at the history of early calligraphy and the beginnings of Italic including works of Arrighi and Palatino.

We studied the logic of  Italic by creating parallelograms with the proper proportions and steps for writing each letter. “While there is no definitive Italic, it is slanted between five to ten degrees, has definite shapes, is modular and consistent.”

Ascenders, waist line, base line, descenders, serif styles, flourishes, nib preparation and PRACTICE.  We have “Spirit” of Italic.  Thank you Doug!

On our last class, we enjoyed the first hour outside, in the summer's pleasant temperature. Once indoors, the class experienced the first use of our new document camera and digital projector. Workshops will never be the same since you can see everything the teacher is writing--projected on the wall. It's as if you're sitting on the teacher's shoulder, with a bird's eye view.--Yvonne
