In Our Own Backyard
Guest Presenters, SDFC members Doug Boyd, Naomi Lesberg,
Diane Reiter, and Patsy Roeder

IMG_0500How nice to see so many of you at the first meeting of the calligraphic year! Kati Searcy introduced the board and volunteers, all of whom have been busy planning our guild’s activities. (Have you renewed your membership?)

The birthday card contest for 2012 was announced. Bring your sample of a 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 inch, two-dimensional (easy to photocopIMG_0506y) card to the November meeting. Members present will vote to choose the “official” SDFC 2012 Birthday Card that will be sent to each member on his or her birthday. If you haven’t had a birthday yet this year, you’re in for a real treat.

Linda West, membership volunteer, announced that there will be a place in the new roster to list a name you prefer to be known by. Just let Grace or Linda  know. Linda also introduced the guests and vIMG_0501isitors to the meeting, including Patsy Roeder’s students. Bob Roeder, Joe & Connie Nierodzinski, Lynn Hodgman (who recently moved here from Kansas City), Sandy Roberts, and Margaret Cobleigh: we hope to see you again!

Kati reviewed our upcoming workshops, and she reminded everyone not to wait to sign up. She then presented Rose Smutko, workshops mentee, who polled the group to determine if there was interest for a December 10th Holiday Tea at the Horton Grand Hotel downtown (more discussion is needed) or a Photoshop Elements workshop (check here for recommended free classes.

Tonight’s program highlighted four local SDFC members who teach calligraphy and related arts: Doug Boyd, Naomi Lesberg, Diane Reiter, and Patsy Roeder. Each instructor had a display of student work, and each gave a brief pIMG_0491resentation of what their classes are like

DOUG BOYD
Doug started calligraphy in 1988, and started teaching in IMG_04761989-90. His classes are held in La Mesa on Thursday mornings for 2 1/2 hours at the La Mesa Adult Enrichment Center (formerly the Senior Center). Anyone can come to his class regardless of skill. The classes are informative and enlightening, as well as fun. Every student gets to take away something they have made. All leave feeling “enriched.” Doug likes to teach something “different”. He wants to acquaint students with tools and materials, as well as give a general art study. He wants students “to look and to see”. You are welcome to join the current class, which started 9/8 and runs to 12/1, even if you’ve missed a class. This Fall’s class involves the Micron Pen and costs $15 with a $5 materials fee. Click for flyer. Doug will be presenting the SDFC May Workshop this year.

NAOMI LESBERG
IMG_0494Naomi teaches 8-week sessions of Acrylic Painting at Poway Adult School and 4-week sessions in the summer. Class is 3 hours long on Wednesday mornings and  evenings. Naomi does not teach calligraphy, but concentrates on basic art concepts: drawing, color theory, composition, etc. Each class begins with direct instruction in these areas aIMG_0542s well demos of materials and techniques unique to acrylics. After this, students have “studio time” to work on their own paintings. The classes are a mixture of new and returning students, some even work in oil, pastel, and watercolor. Naomi exhibited her students’ work at the Celebrate Woman Exhibit (Poway Center for the Performing Arts) and at the Del Mar Fair where students won ribbons.

Diane also teaches at Poway Adult School. She offers instruction in calligraphy and bookbinding in sessions that vary in length. Pointed Pen Variations starts September 22. Occasionally she teaches other classes in other areas and at her home in Rancho Penasquitos. Her website has the most current information. Diane also showed the concertina folding book that she will be teaching us at the October General Meeting. And if you have not signed up for her soft-covered book workshop yet, you should do so. We will probably make 8 to l0 books. Paper and books will be measured and cut already!

PATSY ROEDER:IMG_0481
IMG_0503Patsy loves adult school. She first studied tole painting and then italic lettering, and was encouraged to join SDFC. She stated that there are 33,000 students enrolled in Adult Schools at 100 different sites. Patsy teaches 3 trimesters in La Mesa at the La Mesa Adult Enrichment Center on Friday mornings. Patsy has also taught English at the high school and college level, and she started La Mesa Scribes. Her current class is pointed pen.
