Even though it was a month after Saint Patrick’s Day we found the pot of gold at April’s SDFC Meeting. In fact, teacher Yvonne Perez-Collins led us to a rainbow of gold paints, inks, pens and powders. As we work on calligraphy and art projects there are many golds from which to choose and we wonder, which is best? Yvonne’s research and our testing were applied to over 25 different gold products to see how they could be applied with brush, pointed and broad pen, to white and black paper. We created numbered samplers and Yvonne provided a detailed key to help us choose our golds for future projects.

Yvonne described each product and its type at the beginning of the meeting using the key she created on a spread sheet. The key also included information on cost and availability of each product. She had prepared each gold for use with our pens and brushes (except for the marking pens) and placed them on numbered paper plates so that we could pass them around to all participants.IMG_3539a

As we applied the golds to our papers there were many comments including, “ooh that one really sparkles!”, as someone found a favorite. Participants also found some golds that looked green, bronze or even white when compared to others. Applying the gold with brush and pen was practical for viewing; and also for pen loading. Learning how to mix, thin and load the paints and powder solutions were helpful for future reference also.

SDFC calligraphers weren’t the only artists to benefit from Yvonne’s well researched presentation. Among the evening’s guests were several members of “Book Arts’ San Diego.”
