The Heart of the Matter: Getting Inspired for Lettering Arts in 2012
Guest Presenter, Linda WestFeb 12 mtg 2

A busy meeting was held on a blustery (for San Diego) evening. President Sue Rye reminded us that a nominating committee has formed and we’re looking to fill positions on next year’s board and volunteers. Open positions are workshops assistant, vice president, secretary, and possibly membership or publicity. If you are at all interested, please speak to Jeanen or Kati or any current volunteer and learn how to be a part of this dynamic and fun group.

Linda West, SDFC Membership Volunteer, gave a very thought-provoking presentation to members at our Friday night meeting. The lecture was entitled “The Heart of SDFC.” Since February 7, 2012, marked the bicentenary of Charles Dickens’s birth, Linda used Dickens beloved A Christmas Carol as a starting point, substituting the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present & Future with the History of SDFC’s Past, Present & Future. Linda discussed changes of our organization and our mission statement through the years. She summarized our existing organization’s goals and miFeb 12 mtg 1ssion statement. We then broke into smaller groups to discuss what will inspire us in the future and what we would change in our current mission statement to make it more relevant. Linda challenged us to “Kick it up a notch” when we set goals for the future. The smaller groups then reported their conclusions to the entire group.

She concluded the meeting with an individual survey of ten questions, asking that we answer three of the ten questions and turn in the material, encouraging anyone who had additional suggestions to e-mail them to her. Linda achieved her goal of reflection of the past, examining the current situation, while inspiring members to get involved and set higher standards for the future growth of our organization.

Many thanks to Linda and her audiovisual helper, Allen West, for their presentation.
