Hands Across the Sea: Spain--
A Calligraphic Travelogue
Guest Lecturer, Risa Gettler

Risa says, “Letters are the compass I travel by. I traveled with the express purpose of creating a slide presentation because I believe others are as curious as I to see these letters from other places. I time-traveled through Andalusia, Spain, and Fez, Africa, hop- scotching from Neolithic caves to the 20th century... from man’s discovery of fire to the pop-up toaster. Many of the letters I found most interesting were not historical manuscripts but on the street: grab-shots of graffiti, city and business signs, bullfight and flamenco posters plus those of scribes I met in Barcelona.” (Photo above left: exterior church wall, Barcelona, Spain.)

Now is a good time to start putting items aside for our June meeting and traditional Trash and Treasures Auction. This year we are adding a community service element to the event.Yvonne Perez-Collins will be collecting art supplies and other art-related donations to be distributed to the artists who were so terribly affected by the fires near Julian.
