The Role of the Calligrapher in Present Day Society,
Guest Lecturer, Charles Pearce

In his presentation and slide show, Charles Pearce traced his career from the time of his induction into the Society of Scribes up to the present. His development has mirrored that of calligraphy in general, through that period, from the straight- forward, well written work of the sixties, to the more expressive work of today. During the last few years he has felt himself being pushed into the role of social commentator, to which expressive calligraphy is ideally suited.

Charles Pearce is regarded as one of the world's foremost calligraphers and has taught and lectured widely throughout Europe, North America and Australia. He is the author of a number of books on calligraphy. His current projects include three large calligraphic panels (4' x 8') combining the poetry of Dylan Thomas with quotes by and about native Americans and sundry other works on canvas. His work can be viewed on his website at www.charlespearce.com

He is teaching a four-day class, Calligraphy on Canvas, for SDFC this weekend.
