Happy New Year! SDFC’s first meeting of 2009 was quite a success. Outgoing Librarian Beverly Frank and Historian Phyllis Miller were thanked for their years of service and presented with gift certificates. V.P. Kati Searcy then announced that our new Publicity Chairperson is Sue Rye, our new Librarian is Cyndi Evans, and our new Historian is Elizabeth Kenney. It is so gratifiying when members become more involved and “step up to the plate.” Thank you all!
Carol Pallesen’s slide show presentation documented her trip to Italy 10 years ago during which she sought out images of lettering: good and bad; painted, carved, and forged; ancient and contemporary. Many lettering examples were beautiful, and many unexpectedly made us laugh. She introduced us to the concept of “wabi-sabi”, a Japanese philosophy of beauty (click here to learn more--nl) Carol also brought several of the crayon rubbings she made while traveling, and of course, some of her cards.
Reminder for February: Our meeting will be on the 20th instead of the usual second Friday of the month. Join us for a “Night at the Movies.” We’ll be looking for you.
