How I Got from There to Here,
Charyla Bridges Olsen, Guest Lecturer

After a lively business meeting during which we heard about upcoming workshops and venues for Calligraphy Month activities, Charyla Bridges Olsen presented a slide show of her work.

Charyla is a Southern California native who graduated from Biola University with a B.A. in Humanities, emphasis in Literature. She started taking classes at U.C. Riverside and finished the Calligraphy Certificate program with Bonnie Nelson and Marty Nicolas. Currently she freelances, takes commissioins, and creates artwork for juried shows around the country. Her workshop, Gothicized Italic, was held Saturday, October 9, 2004

Charyla’s slides showed her work from early development to current state. She explained how she researches ideas and works from thumbnails to practice sheets on her garage floor to finals on “good” paper. We especially appreciated the close ups of her intricate pieces, and those fortunate enough to be signed up for her workshop were especially excited to see examples of the gothicized italic that they would be learning..
