Painterly Surfaces

Jacqueline Lacey

On October 11, 2003, participants explored some of the ways to paint, scratch, texturize, build up, mask, collage, print, stamp, crayon and scrape on a surface support (i.e., paper, canvas, masonite). Working on a variety of different papers and canvas, they gathered ideas for stand-alone art, calligraphic backgrounds, re-cycling “failed” art works, journal covers, and art cards.

All agreeed that it helped to have an open mind, a willingness to try, and a sense of humor and adventure about creativity! It was also appreciated that most of the materials and tools were provided or were for sale during the class, so no one had to purchase items they didn’t need. The materials fee was quite reasonable, too.
