Explorations with Colored Pencil

with Jane Shibata

The focus of this workshop, given on Saturday, April 13, 2002, was to generate ideas and discover a variety of solutions using colored pencils for calligraphic lettering projects. Various techniques were shown with Prismacolor and other colored pencil brands. Since paper is vital to the look of the colors, each participant left with a paper sample book of colored pencil tests. Jane’s intent was to have us exploring different avenues with an old medium to kick start new ideas. As Beverly Frank said, “It really was a great workshop. When the teacher has everything organized everything runs like clockwork and you can really learn. You don't have to leave a workshop with a masterpiece to have a feeling of accomplishment. It gets your creativity flowing and gives you many ideas and techniques for future projects.” (Look for Beverly’s write up in the June 2002 Letter Perfect.)
