"Which Paper? "with Brenda Broadbent

Choosing Fine Art Papers for Calligraphy

Which paper should I use for a wedding poem, a handmade book, a family tree? Which is the “right” side of the paper? When should I worry about archival quality and which papers are archival? How can I get fine hairlines and which paper buckles with watercolor? All these and more questions and dilemmas about choosing paper were explored during this enjoyable day of useful discovery as we learned the language and history of fine art paper.

Each participant was given a packet with more than 48 papers. We wrote on practice papers: watercolor, charcoal, printmaking, text weight, handmade, printing and black papers.  We worked with inks, gouache and watercolors while discussing paper for books, paste paper and embossing. Everyone left with a wealth of well-organized information.
